Sinister 2013

The opening scene for the film sinister start with a video of four bodies hanging from a tree. As a viewer we are unsure of who these characters are because they have bags over their heads covering their faces. By opening the film with this scene it instantly shock the viewer  and makes them want to find out more more.

Camera work

The whole scene is one long take where the camera does not move. The opening has very little editing gone into it, this is done on purposes to make the shot seem as if it is a home made video.

Sound
There is very little sound during the first few minutes of  sinister the only sound that you are able to here is the sound of cine camera. this gives off a crackling noise which gives it a old and vintage feel to the video being shot. By having very little sound it enables the viewer to keep their concentration on the screen instead of the sound.

shutter Island 2010

Shutter island is a physiological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese. The opening credits are separate to the film and do not contain any storyline details. The opening scene is a montage of several locations, The first being a long shot of what seems to be an asylum. The people credited during the opening are those who played a big part in the production of the film, this includes people such as Leonardo Dicaprio as the main actor, Dennis Lehane who's novel the film is based on,  Martin Scorsese the director and several others. As the credits draw to an end an establishing shot of the island is shown to show the main location for the film.

sound

During the opening credits there is no diegetic sound. the only sound that can be heard is the music played over the scene. The music helps to create and build tension,by matching the dark and airy atmosphere of the scene. The music continues to get louder and louder throughout the opening credits making the sequence seem dramatic and adding a sense of intensity.

Editing/Camera-work

The lighting is very low level and dim light, this is to give off an airy and haunting atmosphere. The opening sequence are shot as a montage, this is too give short clips to give a sense of the film but without giving any of the storyline away. Transitions are used to move between different clips during the montage, the dissolve and the fade transition are used to smoothly connect the clips together without them seeming disjointed.

Memento 2000

Memento start with a still of a hand holding an Polarized image, the image shows a man dead on the floor covered in blood. The hand begins to waft the picture and the image starts to fade and become less visible. after the minute mark the image completely fades and then the camera angles changes to a close up of the camera. he we see the image being put back into the camera, which makes the viewer first realize that the scene is being shot in reverse.the  death of this man becomes clear when the gun that killed him is lifted up into the seconds mans hand and the bullet is loaded back into the chamber.

The credits play through out the first minute of memento and this is where the image is we see an extreme close-up of the image, they are shown during a scene of little importance so that they do not distract form the storyline leaving viewer missing key information.  the list of people included in the credits are the main actors/actresses the directors and producers and who the music and costumes were provided by. The credits are written in a bold blue text which is all capitals and fade in and out after each other.

Sound
during the credits non-dietetic music plays this music stops playing as soon as the camera flash at this point we begin to hear dietetic sounds such as the gunshot and the camera.

editing/camera work
The scene starts with an extreme close up of the Polaroid image, the reason an extreme close up is used is to make the viewer look at a specific point and this forces them focus and concentrate and what they are being shown.

Thrillers

A movie thriller is a very broad genre that contains many sub categories. thrillers are made to excite and thriller the viewer. thrillers often contain plot twist to always keep the viewer guessing on what they think is gong to happen, they are suspenseful, dramatic and use a lot of foreshadowing to keep the viewers suspicions high.

Task
we research several different opening scene for thrillers. this was to gain on an understanding of what opening sequences should be like and how they differ from trailers. we looked at the first minutes of these thrillers including the title sequence to see how they are shot and what techniques go into the editing and production of them. We analysed  thrillers so when it came to us making our thriller opening scene we could use the methods and techniques we thought were effective. It also made us aware of what to avoid doing and using when filming and editing for our thriller.

Preliminary task

Introduction

To do this task we split up into groups, I was paired up with Alex and Jake. We decided the best way to plan out our video was to mind map our different our ideas. we branched off five different sections to our mind map. editing, plot, dialogue, camera angles and location for all of these we listed several different ideas and then selected one final idea for our video.

planning

At the start of our first lesson we were introduced to the preliminary task. we were told we have to create a 30 second video that contains at least two characters and four lines of dialogue. one of the character must walk into a room and this is where the dialogue should take place.

We first decided on a plot for a video which was to be a drug exchange. Once we had a plot we then looked at several possible locations and characters to use for our final edit. As a group we thought that the best possible location to film in was the office this was because of our first choice (the canteen) was unavailable for use. And for the characters we wanted the exchange to be between a student and a dinner lady so it could be filmed in school.

filming

the day after we finished planning we moved onto filming our video. Jack a student on a free period offered to act out the part of the student, And then Jake from our group also offered to act but as the part of the dinner lady.

we each took turns using the Cannon DSLR camera  to film different parts of our video. we managed to capture a variety of different shots and angles.

The start of the video was jack outside walking up the stairs. We took a low angle shot of this and also filmed a extreme close up of both jacks feet and the door handle to add depth the scene. once inside we set up the lighting and tripods and continued filming. After Jack was inside he walked over to the office were he meets the dinner lady(Jake) and then exchanged dialogue.  While the dialogue is taking place we shot each line as a shot reverse shot and then ended the scene with another close up of the exchange and then jack walking out.

editing

to edit our video we used Adobe Premier Pro software. we looked through all of the raw footage that we took and selected clips that would go into our final edit. We imported all the clips we would be using and then placed them in the order we wanted them. Once we had one clip we played it through and we could see what parts needed trimming and editing.
